When The Fugard Theatre announced their plans to bring King Kong back to the South African stage, the pressure was on for them to find a woman bold enough to step into the iconic role of Joyce. After a two year search which spanned the world, Nondumiso Tembe was finally cast in the highly coveted role. Born in South Africa and raised in New York City, Nondumiso Tembe is the real deal. An accomplished stage and screen actress as well as a singer-songwriter and dancer, she has managed to excel in every medium that she has stepped into while remaining incredibly grounded and focused on her career. LJ Neilson arrived in South Africa six years ago and has rapidly become one of South Africa’s most in demand musical theatre performers. She has starred in some of South Africa’s biggest hits including Dirty Dancing, Singin’ in the Rain, Funny Girl and Saturday Night Fever for which she was honoured with a 2017 Naledi Award nomination. Later this year she will take on the role of Eva Perón, twice a week, in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita which begins performance at Joburg’s Montecasino in October before transferring to Cape Town’s Artscape Opera House in December.
Magdalene Minnaar is one of those people who makes you question when she has time to sleep. She is the founder of Little Maestros and Biblioteek Productions, where she also serves as Artistic Director. She is an accomplished actress and singer, having performed the coveted role of Christine Daaé in the international touring production of The Phantom of The Opera as well as performing alongside Josh Groban during his tour to South Africa last year. Theatre legends Diane Wilson, Kate Normington and Michele Maxwell have joined forces to star in The Fugard Theatre’s production of Funny Girl. With over a century’s worth of experience between the three of them, they have graced South African stages playing all the iconic roles that theatre has to offer, all while collecting every top accolade along the way. What is interesting to note is the bond that has formed between these three women during the run of the show, leading us to believe that the “sisterhood of the poker ladies” will continue to live on far beyond this production.

Far from being an unknown, Ashleigh has spent most of her career performing straight plays, most of them being classical works and even snagging a Naledi Award nomination along the way. Chloe Perling is an actress, singer and dancer. Currently she has returned to her role of Consuela in The Fugard Theatre’s production of West Side Story which makes its Johannesburg transfer. In her short time since graduating from The Waterfront Theatre College, Chloe has starred in three back-to-back Fugard musicals including Cabaret, West Side Story and The Rocky Horror Show and made her on-screen debut in Warner Brother’s A Cinderella Story: If the Shoe Fits.
Rent the Musical is celebrating it’s 20th anniversary by returning to South Africa. Led by a cast of fresh-faced newbies, the Stephan Fourie Theatre Company helmed production will embark on a run at Artscape in February followed by a run at the Joburg Theatre in April. Bianca Flanders is the latest addition to The Fugard Theatre’s smash-hit production of David Kramer’s District Six- Kanala. Recently joining the show in its third incarnation, Bianca has managed to make the role her own. She has also starred in Blood Brothers, Orpheus in Africa and Niqabi Ninja which ran last year during The Cape Town Fringe Festival.
